Why does lvm hang in RHEL 4 guest while ESX 4.0 host is under contention?

Issue

RHEL4 AS running in VMware and when host is under contention, RHEL experience an lvm hang that goes into an infinite wait. The same issue does not appear to be evident in RHEL5. Is there any patch for this issue in RHEL4 ?
