Unable to boot the RHEL 5.9 virtual machine after migrating from HyperV 2008 to HyperV 2012

Issue

  • After migrating the RHEL 5.9 virtual machine from HyperV 2008 to HyperV 2012, vm is unable to boot, and following errors are observed on console at the time of booting:

    Unable to access resume device (LABEL=SWAP-hda2)
    mount: could not find filesystem '/dev/root'
    setuproot: moving /dev failed: no such file or directory
    setuproot: error mounting /proc: no such file or directory
    setuproot: error mounting /sys: no such file or directory
    switchroot: mount failed: no such file or directory
    kernel panic - no syncing: attempted to kill init!
    

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.9
  • kernel 2.6.18-348 and later
  • Microsoft Hyper-V 2012
