Does RHEL support User Portability Utilities?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5

Issue

  • The environment variable POSIX2_UPE is undefined, which seems to suggest that there is no inherent support for user portability in RHEL5.

Resolution

  • Glibc states that this particular option is undefined. This means that RHEL does not conform to that particular optional portion of POSIX.
  • RHEL5 is POSIX compliant for the base definition.  Also, to be compliant, doesn't mean that the OS has to be compliant in all of the optional portions of the standard.

Diagnostic Steps

# getconf -a | grep UPE
POSIX2_UPE
# getconf POSIX2_UPE
undefined
