RHEL 5.6 causes audio issues
Issue
We use VMware workstation on our desktops to give the users access to the Windows environment. One of the things it is most often used for is Live Meeting, Microsoft's audio and video conferencing produc. Because its used in an office environment we use USB headsets (so, the USB head set is used by VMware to present to Windows for use in Live Meeting.)
We've done this successfully for well over a year, until RHEL 5.6 was released. Now, on any kernel in the 5.6 series (-238 kernel), the microphone is basically unusable - there is constant, loud background noise (popping, rumbling and digital stutter). The voice audio is completely unintelligible, and everyone connected to the meeting running 5.6 has to mute their microphone so that others can hear.
Environment
- It affects all recent version of VMware Workstation: 6.5.2, 7.1.0, 7.1.1, 7.1.2 and the latest, 7.1.3.
- The last kernel known to work is the -201 hotfix kernel
- It affects multiple hardware platforms with different chipsets, for example, HP z800 (Intel) and HP xw9400 (AMD).
