RPM installs hang when there is a hung NFS mount in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

While installing RPMs across a large part of the Linux systems, we are finding it hangs when a stale NFS mount exists.

Running rpm with very verbose settings show it hangs where it looks at mounted filesystems, here it was manually killed after some time:

[root@kvm-guest-52 ~]# rpm -ivvv /path/to/example.noarch.rpm
D: ============== /path/to/example.noarch.rpm
D: Expected size:        14961 = lead(96)+sigs(772)+pad(4)+data(14089)
D:   Actual size:        14961
D: opening db environment /var/lib/rpm/Packages joinenv
...
D: opening db environment /var/lib/rpm/Packages joinenv
D: opening  db index       /var/lib/rpm/Packages create mode=0x42
D: mounted filesystems:
D: i dev bsize bavail iavail mount point
