Why do I receive "received packet with own address as source address" errors in my Xen hosts?

Issue

My RHEL5 Xen host shows multiple entries in /var/log/messages with complaints about packets received on a physical network interface with its own address as source address:

> Feb 20 04:09:07 xenhost01 kernel: printk: 24 messages suppressed.
> Feb 20 04:09:07 xenhost01 kernel: pbond1: received packet with own address as source address
> Feb 20 04:09:12 xenhost01 kernel: printk: 24 messages suppressed.
