Interface disappears from ifconfig

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6

Issue

  • While the server is running, eth0 disappears from ifconfig. Restarting the network system (/etc/init.d/network) does not work and displays the following error:

  • Device eth0 has different MAC address than expected, ignoring.

  • When the NIC disappears, the following errors are visible in /var/log/message:
    kernel: cpqphp: PCI Slot #6 - powering off due to button press.
    kernel: ACPI: PCI interrupt for device 0000:02:02.0 disabled.
    

RHEL 6:

pciehp 0000:00:02.0:pcie04: Latch open on Slot(0)
pciehp 0000:00:02.0:pcie04: Latch close on Slot(0)
pciehp 0000:00:02.0:pcie04: Button pressed on Slot(0)
pciehp 0000:00:02.0:pcie04: PCI slot #0 - powering off due to button press.
igb_uio 0000:05:00.0: PCI INT A disabled
igb_uio 0000:05:00.1: PCI INT B disabled

Resolution

  • The issue was identified has a failed network card in the server. Replacing it solved the problem.
