hwclock failed during boot when using realtime kernel

Issue

hwclock fails during boot when using the realtime kernel. Following is output error

After adding --debug to the hwclock command invocation in /etc/rc.sysinit, the following output is seen:

INIT: version 2.86 booting
Welcome to Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server
Press 'I' to enter interactive startup.
hwclock from util-linux-2.13-pre7
hwclock: Open of /dev/rtc failed, errno=19: No such device.
No usable clock interface found.
Cannot access the Hardware Clock via any known method.
Setting clock (utc): Sun Feb 6 21:35:17 CET 2011 [ OK ]
