System fails to boot with smartd enabled in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5

Issue

  • System failed to boot up after smartd installation. It gave the following error while booting up:

    hdc: status error: status =0x58 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest}
    ide: failed opcode was : unknown
    hdc: drive not ready for command
    hdc: status timeout: status=0xd8 {Busy}
    ide: failed opcode was unknown

  • HP DL385G7
  • smartmontools-5.38-2.el5-x86_64
