Problem to boot a server with a missing disks

Issue

Booting a Red Hat Eenterprise Linux  5.5 server with a missing data disks but the FS / is mount in read-only mode and can't modify the /etc/fstab to allow the system to boot without the missing VG. (in RHEL 4 the FS / was mounted in read-write mode so that I can reboot the server without the missing VG)
