After creating mode 6 bonds in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, the bonded network interfaces may refuse to shutdown properly, causing system hangs when power cycling.

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

The /sbin/ifdown script does not shut down bonded interfaces in the correct order, which causes the /etc/init.d/network init script to become unresponsive during the system shutdown, or upon restarting the network service script.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 Update 5.
  • Mode 6 bond interfaces.
