"Text-like" files (such as C source and shell scripts) may not print to a text-only printer in RHEL

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • CUPS may not print files with .p extension.  These files are progress 4gl files. The error msg is lp: unsupported format application /x- c source.
  • You may not be able to print C-language source files to a text-only printer.
  • I tried to print using lp and it gives me an error "lp: Unsupported format 'application/x-shell'!".

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5, 6, and 7
  • "Textonly" printer
