RHEL5.5 Cron script causing pam security errors

Issue

  • Cron script is failing and creating pam security error messages in /var/log/cron:
Sep 15 09:01:01 Hostname crond[17936]: (root) CMD (run-parts /etc/cron.hourly)  
Sep 15 10:01:01 Hostname crond[20147]: Bad item passed to pam_*_item()  
Sep 15 10:01:01 Hostname crond[20147]: CRON (root) ERROR: failed to open PAM security session: Success  
Sep 15 10:01:01 Hostname crond[20147]: CRON (root) ERROR: cannot set security context  
Sep 15 11:01:01 Hostname crond[22259]: Bad item passed to pam_*_item()
