System does not boot after a vgrename of the LogicalVolume that contains the /-filesystem

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • The system does not boot after renaming the Volume Group that contains the Logical Volume for the root-filesystem.
  • The server reports errors stating Volume group "VolGroup00" not found and/or errors mounting root filesystem.
  • Rescue mode (from the install media) may also be unable to find and mount the volumes, but manual lvm commands can locate and activate the volumes and the root filesystem can be manually mounted.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4, 5, and 6.
  • Root file system on a Logical Volume
