Using mirrored Clustered LVM, LVM metadata randomely get overwritten

Issue

  • An environment using mirroring in Clustered LVM, LVM metadata randomely gets overwritten and causes LVM to throw Incorrect metadata area header checksum, unknown device or missing PVs errors, which results in LVM to be inaccessible to Physical Volumes / Logical Volumes.
  # lvs
   Incorrect metadata area header checksum
   # vgdisplay | egrep "missing|unknown"
    There are 1 physical volumes missing.
       PV Name               unknown device    

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • Red Hat Cluster Suite
  • CLVMD and Mirrored Logical Volumes
  • Over 255 device-mapper devices (LVM, multipath, etc.)
  • cmirror version < cmirror-1.1.39-8.el5_5.1
