What is "type=" parameter to pam_cracklib.so?

In RHEL 6.4, file
/etc/pam.d/system-auth, thepassword requisiteline includes trailing parametertype=with no value. What is the effect of that parameter? Can it be omitted? What are valid values for it? -
How to change or customize the password prompt ?
