snmpd does not start up on RHEL5.

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Executing "service" command with "start" option outputs "OK", but snmpd proccess does not exist.
# service snmpd start
Starting snmpd: [ OK ]

# ps aux | grep snmp
root 3545 0.0 0.0 440 132 pts/1 R+ 11:14 0:00 grep snmp
  • After that executing, "service" command with "status" option outputs the following message, and "stop" option outputs "FAILED."
# service snmpd status
snmpd dead but subsys locked

# service snmpd stop
Stopping snmpd: [FAILED]

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • net-snmp
