What do 'arch' and 'machine' in the config files of KVM guests signify?

Solution Unverified - Updated -

Issue

  • What do 'arch' and 'machine' in the config files of KVM guests signify?

  • The XML file of  a RHEL guest OS  shows "<type arch='x86_64' machine='rhel5.4.0'>hvm</type>" which sounds right, but the XML file of a Windows guest also shows the same. For a Windows guest OS, shouldn't the expected value of machine be "machine=win2003hvm" or something similar?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4
  • KVM
