Why I am unable to log into the server using telnet?

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • telnet

Issue

  • Why am I unable to log into the server using telnet?
  • Following error messages are seen in logs:
ttloop: peer died: EOF

Resolution

  • To avoid such type of an issue, please either increase the telnet instances size or set it to UNLIMITED. It can be done by editing the /etc/xinetd.conf file as below.
instances = UNLIMITED
  • And then restart the xinetd service:
# service xinetd restart

Root Cause

  • The error messages are indicating that system has reached the limit of telnet instances. Hence refusing the valid users to log in.
