PAM unable to dlopen (/lib64/security/pam_limit.so) errors when trying to login to RHEL 6 console

Issue

  • Unable to login through the console.

  • Below from /var/log/messages:

May 21 11:50:54 XXXX init: tty (/dev/tty1) main process ended, respawning
May 21 11:53:25 XXXX init: tty (/dev/tty1) main process ended, respawning
May 21 11:54:06 XXXX init: tty (/dev/tty1) main process (10784) terminated with status 1
  • And /var/log/secure:
May 22 08:38:39 XXXX login: PAM unable to dlopen(/lib64/security/pam_limit.so): /lib64/security/pam_limit.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
May 22 08:38:39 XXXX login: PAM adding faulty module: /lib64/security/pam_limit.so
May 22 08:38:55 XXXX login: pam_unix(login:session): session opened for user root by LOGIN(uid=0)
May 22 08:38:55 XXXX login: Module is unknown
