When replacing a faulty drive in a software raid (md) device, mdadm fails to add device with "Cannot open /dev/sda1: Device or resource busy" in RHEL

Issue

  • When I added a drive to replace a failed member of a software raid array, mdadm will not add it to the array:
# mdadm --manage /dev/md0 --add /dev/sda1
mdadm: Cannot open /dev/sda1: Device or resource busy

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 4, 5, or 6
  • md software RAID
