After removing tape drive, server panics and keeps doing so every 1 - 2 days

Issue

Unplug tape SAN fibre channel cables prior to rebooting/ booting.  Console reports that there was a kernel panic; and the server needed a reboot.                               
                                                      
Server keeps crashing every 1 - 2 days     
                                                      
Prior to booting/rebooting the following must be done:
                                                      
Remove the fibre channel cables (from the dual port Emulex HBA card) that connect to TAPE SAN. See below. 
                                                      
  Port 0 --> NAB839 gdwdrp4_tape(A)                     
                                                      
  Port 1 --> NAB840 gdwdrp4_tape(B)                     
                                                      
Once the OS has booted into multi-user mode, reconnect the fibre channel cables.
