pam_tally can not read /var/log/faillog in PPC64 bit

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • "sbin/pam_tally" is not reading /var/log/faillog file on RHEL 5 PPC64 bit machine.
  • This is reproducible on multiple RHEL 5 PPC64 machines. But "pam_tally" works as expected on i386 and x86_64 bit machines.

In this case the user "tom" has number of failed logins, but pam_tally shows none -

[root@power5-2 ~]# pam_tally --user tom
User tom        (500)   has 0

[root@power5-2 ~]# pam_tally --user tom --reset
User tom        (500)   had 0

[root@power5-2 ~]# pam_tally --user tom
User tom        (500)   has 0

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.5 (ppc64)
  • pam-0.99.6.2-6.el5_4.1
