"gs" command (ghostscript) may create PDF from which text cannot be extracted

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

  • We create PDF files from PostScript documents using the gs command from ghostscript. The PDF created and is perfectly viewable in any PDF reader like Evince or Acrobat Reader; the problem is when the PDF is converted to text. This can be replicated using the pdftotext command, which will create garbled text, while before it produced readable data.
  • Problems with ghostscript after upgrading. ghostscript-8.70-23 creates a PDF file from which text can't be extracted, whereas the text can be extracted from PDF files created with ghostscript-8.70-19.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.7
  • ghostscript-8.70-20 or newer version in RHEL 6
