Why installation of RHEL6.4 on a remote iSCSI disk hangs while disk formatting with error "attempt to access beyond end of device"?

Issue

  • Installation of RHEL6.4 on a remote iSCSI disk hangs.
  • The installation hangs when anaconda installer begins to partition/format the remote iscsi disk.
  • The iSCSI array being used is 10Gig Array.
  • The following Error messages were captured by hitting Alt+Ctrl+F2

attempt to access beyond end of device

attempt to access beyond end of device
sdc1: rw=513, want=18446744073709549568, limit=1024000
attempt to access beyond end of device

attempt to access beyond end of device
sdc1: rw=513, want=18446744073709549568, limit=1024000
  • This can happen in some scenarios like follows.
    • Boot from iSCSI
    • OS is installed on local disk, but the data LUN comes from 10GB iSCSI storage.
    • RHEL 6.3 OS is upgraded to RHEL 6.4

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.4
  • kernel-2.6.32-358.el6.x86_64
  • iscsi-initiator-utils-6.2.0.873-2.el6
