How to use JIS X 0208 or JIS2004 as default Japanese font with Emacs on RHEL6

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Red Hat will not use JIS2004 font as default font in RHEL6, however emacs-23.1-18.el6 (prior to 21.el6) wrongly used JIS2004 font as default.

  • This bug was fixed on emacs-23.1-21.el6 (or later).

  • So please be aware that:

    1. emacs-23.1-18.el6 (prior to 21.el6), due to the bug,  wrongly used JIS2004 (JIS X 0213:2004) as default font.

    2. emacs-23.1-21.el6 (or later), fixed version,  will use JIS X 0208 (JIS X 0208:1990) as default font.

  • The  fonts displayed slightly differently in some cases, and some of the  characters may not be able to be displayed in normal terminals.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6

  • emacs-23.1-18.el6 (prior to 21.el6) / emacs-23.1-21.el6 or later
