Mounting a LogicalVolume gives "wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock"

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Mounting a Logical Volume fails with the following output:
mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/oravg/ora03,
       missing codepage or other error
In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try
       dmesg | tail or so
  • /var/log/messages (or dmesg) shows:
kernel: ext3: No journal on filesystem on dm-213

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • Logical Volume Manager (LVM)
  • assuming an ext3 fileystem (but actually is ext2)
  • multipath
