How can I force SNMP to report the correct speed of a network interface on a Xen or KVM guest?

Issue

When using net-snmp to monitor the status of network interfaces on virtualised guests, the speed of an interface is reported as either 10Mbit or zero, not the speed of the underlying physical NIC.

Environment

  • Xen Hypervisor: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5

  • KVM Host: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 or above

  • Guest: Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 or 5

  • net-snmp
