System time is not updated after a reboot

Issue

  • After a reboot, the system time is not updated immediately

  • ntpd service is enabled at boot but its configuration file (/etc/sysconfig/ntpd) has been modified to add -x flag as shown below

    • Default configuration file

      # Command line options for ntpd
      OPTIONS="-g"
      
    • Current configuration file

      # Command line options for ntpd
      OPTIONS="-g -x"
      
  • ntpdate service is disabled at boot (this is the default)

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 7
  • ntpd
