OOM Killer not invoked in MRG 1.2

Issue

  • When under severe memory pressure system hangs due to OOM killer not being invoked.
  • oom-killer takes too much time on bigger machines (~2h on a 32GB system) to take action and kill the memory consuming process.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5

  • MRG 1.2 kernels 2.6.24.x-xxx.el5rt kernels
