Satellite database attempts to initiate twice after upgrade to 5.3

Solution Verified - Updated -

Environment

  • Red Hat Network Satellite 5.x

Issue

  • Satellite database attempts to initiate twice after upgrade to 5.3

Resolution

  • The issue is caused by duplicate lines in /etc/oratab. Please do the following:
"awk -F: '/:Y$/ { print $1 " " $2}' </etc/oratab"
  • If you see more than one line starting with rhnsat,
then edit /etc/oratab to remove the duplicate then try restarting rhn-satellite again.

Root Cause

After a recent upgrade from Satellite version 5.2 to version 5.3 the database startup script is attempting to start/stop the db twice each time (line item 5).  I'm not sure if this is intentional or not, but there is a line in the output that indicates a failure when starting up the Oracle db instance rhnsat (2nd attempt fails because it's already started).
