If I configure persistent storage for OpenShift, do I still need a docker thin pool storage?

Issue

We provisioned docker thin pool storage
We also provided an NFS based storage, and linked metrics, logging and registry storage to this volume.
Will the individual docker pool volumes on each node be ever used?
Is persistent volume common to all nodes or will it just be used by metrics, logging and registry?
What's the difference between PV/PVC and thinpool storage?
Is docker-storage-setup mandatory?
