rpmbuild cannot package large files in RHEL 4 and 5

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Attempting to rpmbuild with a file larger than 2Gb throws an error "error: Package too large (> 2147483647 bytes)"
  • attempt to create rpm that consists of large >2GB tarballs fails
  • RHEL5 rpm cannot archive files greater than 2GB with current cpio component.
  • rpmbuild segfaults while trying to build a package with files > 2Gb in RHEL 4.6-4.7

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 4 Update 6 or later
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 5
