improving directory traversal performance

Solution In Progress - Updated -

Issue

For improving performance in RHGS (especially directory traversal) the admin guide recommends the following options

tuning performance.

Sometimes if that is not suffecient, then we recommend turning off client side healing turn off client heal.

Even if that does not improve the directory traversal experience, then we will have to turn off a feature called readdirp from glusterfs stack completely. Readdirp is a file operation where the gluster client will do stat on every entry it gets as part of readdir operation while traversing directory. Thus this leads extra on-disk operations on each entry in the directory for getting its stat information.
