Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.5
Issue
- How to setup virtualization on RHEL 5.5 server and host Windows XP guest?
Resolution
Xen and KVM are the two options in setting up virtualization in RHEL 5.5. Xen or KVM fully virtualized guest can be used for installing Windows XP. And install the corresponding para-virtualized drivers for better performance.
* First subscribe the system to virtualization sub-channel in RHN:
1. login into Red Hat Network: http://rhn.redhat.com
2. click on 'systems' link on the red bar across the top of the screen.
3. click on the profile name of system to set up as host for virtualization.
4. click on Alter Channel Subscriptions.
5. check the box for Virtualization and click on Change Subscriptions button.
- Then install the virtualization packages using yum.
Please refer the following guide for more details, which includes the installation of Windows XP as a virtual machine and installation of para-virtualized drivers.
