Are file handles randomly generated in NFS?
Environment
- Red Hat Enterprise Linux
Issue
- Are file handles randomly generated in NFS?
- Is there any form of file handle spoofing via NFS that is provided by Red Hat?
Resolution
- No. File handles are not randomly generated in NFS, however file handles should be opaque to the client, the server uses specific portions of a file and that export to generate a file handle. This is information that should only be available server side, such as the inode of the file. The file handles aren't necessarily "randomly" generated each time a client connects though.
