Why does Installation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 stop and Kickstart profile doesn't get loaded when static IP addresses are provided on command line?

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • Doing kickstart installation of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3.
  • Kickstart profile is located in a network location. i.e. http://192.168.0.254/ks.cfg
  • When system is booted with minimal boot media, and the following command line parameters are passed at boot: prompt, the anaconda fails to download kickstart file from the network location and halts the installation.
  • Steps to reproduce:
    1. Boot using RHEL 6.3 DVD ISO image.
    2. On boot screen, press to access the Boot: prompt.
    3. At the boot prompt, enter the following:
boot: linux ks=http://192.168.0.254/ks.cfg ksdevice=link ip=192.168.0.1 netmask=255.255.255.0 gateway=192.168.0.254 dns=192.168.0.254 text noipv6

or alternatively

boot: linux ks=http://192.168.0.254/ks.cfg asknetwork text noipv6

4. Hit Enter and kickstart will fail.
5. The boot parameters ksdevice=<MAC> linksleep=60 nicdelay=60 are also verified. The issue persists on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3
6. This doesn't happen on Dynamic IP addresses.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6.3
