Why does the Broadcom NetXtreme network interface not get detected in RHEL4.2 using kernel version '2.6.9-22.ELsmp' ?

The network adapter from Broadcom is not being detected properly on a Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.2 machine, why ?

The interface does not show up in the network devices drop-down list while using 'system-config-network'.

'dmesg' does not have any details on the card being detected.
