Poor X11 performance over network in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Client while connecting from from Windows system using Hummingbird Exceed

Issue

  • Poor X11 performance is observed while connecting to RHEL5 system from Windows using Hummingbird Exceed
  • On windows system make sure Exceed is running, ssh to the RHEL5 box and then run the below commands

export DISPLAY=IP.of.Windows.system:0.0
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH=/usr/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
cd /usr/local/eclipse-3.4.1/eclipse
./eclipse -data /home/user1/workspace-adam &

  • Screen refresh of the eclsipe Xwindow gui is very slow compared to when the same process done for RHEL4 box.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • eclipse-3.4.1
  • Hummingbird Exceed-8.0 on Windows OS

Resolution

  • Use compression option with ssh while connecting from remote system.

  • In ssh command provided with Linux you can use '-C' switch for compression. Look for similar option in ssh client on Windows.

  • Try using any other X application on Windows
