fsck on labeled filesystem fails because blkid points to the wrong device

Issue

  • fsck -A fails to check a filesystem. Error:
    fsck.ext2: No such file or directory while trying to open /dev/hdb2
    
  • /dev/hdb2 does not exist. (fdisk -l or /proc/partitions)
  • The blkid command shows labels pointong to this non existing filesystem
    /dev/hdb2: LABEL="/" UUID="173328b6-582b-4137-a677-553a2680ff50" TYPE="ext3"
    
  • The mount command might even list this non existing device as mounted

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4
  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5
  • Changes in harddrive enumeration order
