kmod weak-modules utility removing symlinks for older versions of a third-party kmod when a new version is installed

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • When using third party add-on modules that require rebuilds for a minor ".Y" release (e.g. 7.3), installing a new kernel and a new add-on module for it can result in the previous version's weak-modules symlinks for the previous kernel being incorrectly removed.
    • If this happens, a boot into the previous kernel will fail to load the addon driver.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7.4
  • kmod version == kmod-20-15.el7
