During system shutdown or reboot , clvmd service fails with the error "Can't deactivate volume group" on RHEL 5.5

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • System shutdown order for clvmd and gfs/gfs2 seems incorrect.
  • The systems would hang during a reboot because they couldn't deactivate the clustered logical volume groups when stopping the clvmd system service. While the 5.5 system reboots, the deactivation of a volume group with a GFS filesystem fails, because the system first tries to deactivate the volume group before unmounting the GFS filesystem. Subsequentially, stopping of the cman system service fails.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.5 (Tikanga)

  • lvm2-cluster-2.02.56-7.el5
