rhel6: kdump fails due to a hang after kernel panic at the system kernel

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

kdump failed due to deadlock with mm->page_table_lock after kernel panic at the system kernel. This issue occurs on every RHEL6 kernel but not on RHEL7 or upstream
kernel.

When this issue occurs:

  • there is no characteristic message indicating this issue occuring, and
  • there is no boot messages by the kdump kernel, your system appearing to hang.

This issue is likely to occur under high memory pressure.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6, minor releases below 10
  • kdump
  • kernel panic
  • hang
  • deadlock
