Multipath slows down I/O to a disk

Issue

  • When issuing buffered I/O to a multipath device with a partition on it, it's much slower than writing to a single path of that multipathed device.
  • Writing to a multipath device with a partition is much faster when using direct-io.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) 6.x
  • Device-mapper multipath device
  • Partition on a device-mapper multipath device
