Unable to print to stderr via ssh or sftp on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 and 5.5

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • sftp connections fail if .bashrc outputs to stderr on RHEL 5.4
  • If any login scripts (eg. ~/.bashrc) run commands that attempt to access stderr, the sftp connection will be closed immediately after entering the password.
    $ sftp server.redhat.com
    Connecting to server.redhat.com...
    user@server.redhat.com's password:
    Connection closed
    $

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.4 and 5.5

  • openssh-server-4.3p2-36.el5_4.3
