Wins generated a lot of broadcast traffic

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • On a RHEL machine with the nmbd service running, if another machine with the same WINS domain names wants to be the master browser in the WINS domain, many broadcast packets are observed:
Nov 27 15:40:15 server nmbd[5597]: [2012/11/27 15:40:15.984927, 0] nmbd/nmbd_incomingrequests.c:117(process_name_release_request)
Nov 27 15:40:16 server nmbd[5597]: process_name_release_request: Attempt to release name GROUP<1d> from IP<address1> on subnet <subnet1> being rejected as it is one of our names.
  • So if both WINS servers keep forcing elections and trying to broadcast themselves as WINS master browsers of the network the a first glance it seems that the two machines started to fight with WINS announcements and release requests over the GROUP name.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux
  • WINS server (nmbd) running
