The VMware Tools from ESX 4 can not set the SCSI-timeout for block devices using udev on RHEL4

Issue

  • The VMware-tools can not set the SCSI-timout using udev on Red Hat Enterprise 4.8.

  • It is needed to set the SCSI-timout, i.e. by executing the following command at boot ($DEVPATH should be set to /block/sda or similar):

echo 180 >/sys$DEVPATH/device/timeout

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.8
  • VMware ESX 4
