firewall-cmd active zone always shows public

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • After performing the steps to add an interface to the zone internal, the status never changes.
# nmcli device status
DEVICE TYPE STATE CONNECTION
ens3 ethernet connected ens3

Two interfaces are located (one with .old)

-rw-------. 1 root root 385 Dec 1 16:30 /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ens3
-rw-------. 1 root root 377 Dec 1 16:30 /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-ens3.old

#firewall-cmd --permanent --zone=internal --add-interface=ens3
The interface is under control of NetworkManager, setting zone to 'internal'.
success

[root@rhel7a ~]# firewall-cmd --get-default-zone
public

[root@rhel7a ~]# firewall-cmd --reload
success

The zone is still showing public instead of internal.

[root@rhel7a ~]# firewall-cmd --get-default-zone
public
