LVM command returning error message "Incorrect metadata area header checksum" on Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Issue

  • When running LVM commands receiving error messages with the following pattern:
Incorrect metadata area header checksum on `/dev/sdX` at offset 4096
  • After unexpected reboot, server did not come up. See these errors when running vgdisplay:
# vgdisplay
  /dev/mpath/mpath40p1: Checksum error
  Couldn't read volume group metadata.
  Incorrect metadata area header checksum on /dev/mpath/mpath40p1 at offset 4096
  /dev/mpath/mpath40p1: Checksum error

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux, including

    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 (RHEL5)
    • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 (RHEL6)
  • LVM2 logical volumes
