Server console is not recovering from powersave mode

Solution Verified - Updated -

Issue

  • On RHEL-5 below command worked to avoid the console blanking:
setterm -powersave off -blank 0
  • This no longer works for RHEL6. Console here means the default VGA screen output, which comes from IPMI redirected KVM.

  • Problem persists, even if the following kernel boot parameter is set:

 "consoleblank=0"
  • This is a problem for two reasons:
  1. The console is unusable
  2. After the power-save has kicked in the console is unreadable, so errors cannot be read.
  • Setting rd_NO_PLYMOUTH as a kernel boot parameter has not solved the problem either.

  • Once the console has gone into power-save mode it is impossible to get the screen to come back up, so any console messages cannot be seen.

  • The UCS blades http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps10265/index.html do not use USB for their console access. Instead you browse to the UCS control system and from there you download a java based KVM over IP console.

Environment

  • Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6
  • Cisco UCS B200 Blade
  • No local disk used
  • 2 LUNS from EMC storage
